How to make QR codes the 'Art Work"

Today i experimented  with trying to make the QR codes be the work, Since coming up with this idea i have been struggling with how to tie all of the separate elements of my practice together and i feel this bit of experimentation kind of does that. Use of prop's, miniaturization, putting work on the street and trying to create some sort of interaction / participation from the viewer. I put small Q R codes in to spray-painted gold frames and glued them in groups around the city. I had 16 frames and put them into groups of four- and had pre planned various spaces to put them in - three of the codes related to photographs of my work and the fourth was a map to the next group of four. Throughout all of my briefs and work i have wanted to keep the element of surprise that element of people stumbling upon it, like a secret between me and the viewer. By wanting to keep this part of my work i am almost making a rod for my own back because how to you promote or advertise work when an intrinsic element of it for me is that the viewer should find it themselves. It's not meant to be something that you see on a poster or has a big arrow pointing to it saying "Look at me"

finished cards

The Q R code business cards will act as an image that all of my viewers can keep and repeatedly use as a link to my work.  Whenever the code is scanned they will be directed to my YouTube works ordered from most recent posts allowing full access to my creative progression and approach to commentary on current affairs.  Posting my work online instantly shifts ownership and possibly even authorship but I feel that it is important that the emphasis be on the work rather than me as an artist practitioner, or any gallery as ‘exhibitor’ or ‘curator’.

Test Space Leeds- Becky's video and the artist exhibition

The Test Space exhibition was a success creating a new platform for exhibition expanding on the ideas of art accessibility that I have been exploring with the Q R codes.  By bringing the globally accessible World Wide Web into the gallery space there is a roll reversal of the masses informing the art world as opposed to the ‘white cube’ standardising and verifying ‘good art’.  In this way, my work could be classed as anti-establishment as I use the exhibited Q R codes as the art work itself within the gallery space for our FMP exhibition.  The codes will be screen printed combining traditional ‘good art’ skill and technique for visual communication within the gallery space, but acting as an immediate rout out of the gallery when explored further.

If the viewer is redirected to a gallery space that they are comfortable and familiar with allowing my work to be viewed from an alternate perspective.  It is this perspective and viewing platform that merges the elitist gallery goer with the masses.   That which may be overlooked or simply unseen due to inaccessibility etc, is at least available to all.  The play on scale in the ‘Little boxes’ film further demonstrates the repression of the individual by the ‘white cube’ gallery space.

Business Card development

I wanted to encaptulate the interactivity of my work within my bussiness cards, so i again used the QR codes to facilliate this, i have screen printed a QRcode that links to my website and blog on to thick brown and grey card, and have used a typeset stamp to include the URL on to the back of the card, allowing for people who don't have a smart phone to access it- now that i am using QR codes as my actual final pieces i feel that the code acts as both a link and the image of my work.
